1) So one of my juveniles has a broken finger. She is getting around fine and doesn't seem bothered by it. I only noticed it when I was holding her last night and was trying to adjust her fingers on my shirt and noticed one of her fingers was bent wrong. It's bent under so that it is touching her hand. I tried to straighten it, but it won't budge unless I were to force it and that would just be cruel. Should I have a vet re-set her finger or just leave it? She seems totally fine.
2) Which is a better antibiotic to have around, Baytril or Fortaz? Also, is there a dosage chart for them online? |

Hi Rachel....
Taking your questions in order to see if we can help.
1. The broken finger. Most vets wouldn't even try to treat that digit.
We think that you'd most likely hear either
A) "I can cut it off to get it out of her way." or
B) "That finger isn't needed, so let's just leave it alone."
We would add that we'd keep an eye on things, because she may chew the finger off in order to get it out of her way. At that point, you will want to treat the wound. Make a solution of ten drops of water to one drop of Lugol's Solution. You can get this stuff at most pharmacies. Dip the injured hand in the solution twice daily.
HOWEVER now that we've said all of the above...DON'T HESITATE to ask your herp vet about this situation. Call the office and have the staff ask the doc for you. It'll save you a trip and a bill ...unless the vet feels differently, and wants to try to save the finger.
2. "Which is a better antibiotic to have around....?"
The better antibiotic is whichever one is indicated for the current health problem. (Wasn't that a totally kool hedge?) Seriously, you'd have to KNOW what was causing the illness before you could choose the right medication to treat it. Of course, there are wide spectrum antibiotics, but still, you need to identify as accurately as possible what it is you're trying to treat.
3. "Is there a dosage chart online....?" YEP!!!! There IS a dosage chart online. Here's a link to it.

Let us know if you call the vet about that finger. We'd be interested in what the vet decided to do.
As ever,
Annie and Lisa |

Vets are *so* frustrating... I called just now and they said that they can't say anything unless they see her first. So, for $54 and an hour's drive, they will look at her toe for me... gee, thanks.
I asked hypothetically what the treatment would be for a broken toe. They said that her toe might not even be broken and that they could not diagnose over the phone. I tried to explain that there is virtually no way for her toe to be doing what it is doing without being broken and they finally said that they would likely cut it off if that was the case.
Very nice people, but why can't they just answer a simple question without me having to beg them? Anyway, I got my response and now I will think about it. There's no swelling and she is acting fine, so I will probably watch it for now. The vet suggested she might be in pain, but at the same time, she just pushed her tank mate off their favorite driftwood and took it over herself. Literally stood up and shoved her "sister" right off...
On a side note, Xerxes got pooped on last night. Just a big old glob of poop right on his back. He got a bath and toothbrush scrub... yuck. |

Hi Rachel...
Obviously, we weren't surprised by the vet's response. We know how frustrating that was for you, but there's actually a good reason for the vet giving you the "run around". In these days of litigation-happy people, the vet was/is protecting him/herself from lawsuits. That, and it IS impossible to diagnose without actually seeing the injury.
We're with you...keep an eye on it for now. If you see ANYTHING that would make you suspect infection or some other medical problem...get her to the vet ASAP.
Poor Xerxes, in the wrong place at the wrong time. Don't you just love finding things like that? All of our friends are used to hearing, "Wait, I'm going to put the phone down for a few minutes because I have to clean poop off (whoever's) back." |
